Caloric Surpluses

You need to be in a caloric surplus to maximize muscle growth. Eating more food than your body needs to sustain its current mass will push it to uptake nutrients. This is important to avoid muscle wasting along stimulating muscle hypertrophy when combined with heavy lifting. 

Positive Nitrogen Balance 

To get muscles to hypertrophy or “grow thicker” most efficiently, athletes should aim to achieve a positive nitrogen balance. This means consuming more protein that your body needs to sustain its current lean mass. Having enough protein allows for muscle protein synthesis and the growth of muscle cells.
